Abstract

The book of Jonah belongs to the collection of the twelve minor prophets, but it is very different from all the other prophetic books. It contains a brief narrative about the prophet Jonah and the only "oracle" pronounced has, in the original language, no more than five words (Jonah 3:4). Nowhere in the text do we find anything similar to the oracles of an Isaiah or a Jeremiah, or the visions of an Ezekiel or a Zechariah. Jonah is closer to short stories, such as the books of Ruth or Esther, or the deuterocanonical books of Judith and Tobias. Therefore, we will study the text of Jonah with the tools of narrative analysis.
