Westermann investigated certain structures in the Old Testament which may well be called "pact disputes", with a formula who has made his fortune, because he describes many structured pericopes similar. According to E. Wright, this is one of the recurring forms (Gattung) in the prophetic literature and in the Elohist (E) and Deuteronomic sources (D) of the Hexateuch. In the light of Westermann's work, it can be said that the most appropriate designation for Judges 2.1-3; 6.8-10 and 10.11-14 is that of "pact litigation".
In this article we will undertake a description of the literary progression that these three passages exhibit in the canonical form of Judges and their function both within their immediate contexts as within the book as a literary unit.
