Discussions about the formation of the biblical canon have experienced renewed interest in recent years. The Qumran discoveries, for example, revealed the existence of other forms of biblical literature and, perhaps, other “canons” or libraries of inspired books. Other fields of research that have influenced the debates in this field are studies on writing techniques (papyri, scrolls, codes), on the formation of libraries, or on library catalogues and “literary canons” in the Hellenistic world. In each of these fields, scholars have seen or wanted to see essential elements in the formation of the biblical canon of the Old and New Testament. In this contribution of ours, we would like to examine some of these elements, in particular more material elements, for example, the role of the emperor Constantine and the influence of the Hellenistic educational programme, the paideia, in the Christian world and in the discussions about the biblical canon. Our study cannot be exhaus- tive, of course, but we hope to answer some basic questions about the origin of the Christian canon in the cultural context of the Mediterranean in the fourth and fifth centuries.
