Abstract

Paul articulates in Philippians 3:2-16 the Greco-Roman rhetorical topos of self-praise (periautología) by means of comparing (sýgkrisis) two examples: one of Paul as Jewish fellow –anomalous Pharisee– (vv. 2-6) the other of Paul as disciple of Christ (vv. 7-14). Between these two there is an incrementum (aúx?sis) in the Pauline reasoning demonstrating his anomalous comprehension of the law. Paul’s boasting in Christ exceeds his
previous confidence in the flesh.
